Launching of SMARTSEL's Node1 at Kuala Selangor

BANDAR MELAWATI, 30 August 2019 – SMARTSEL Sdn Bhd (SMARTSEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) (MBI Selangor), has officially launched their connectivity services to Kuala Selangor and INPENS International College (INPENS).

The launch was officiated by YB Tuan Ir Izham bin Hashim, Selangor EXCO on Infrastructure & Public Facilities, Agricultural Modernization and Agro-based Industry. He was accompanied by the CEO of MBI Selangor, YM Raja Shahreen Raja Othman and Managing Director of SMARTSEL, Mohamad Suhaimi Bin Mohamad Tahir.

The launch of the SMARTSEL Digital Network (SDN) Node1 at INPENS in Kuala Selangor is a key milestone for the Selangor State to bring accessible and affordable high-speed connectivity to rural and underserved areas.

The first SDN Node, Node0, has been established in MBI’s own building at Bangunan Darul Ehsan in Shah Alam where the SDN is connected to multiple International Gateways. It also houses SMARTSEL’s Network Operating Centre (NOC). From here, the SDN network will be able to serve affordable, high-speed internet to areas in Shah Alam and the rest of Selangor where other Nodes or Point-of-Presence (PoP) will be established.

Node1 has been developed in INPENS which will enable the institute to utilise the latest in digital technology to further enhance the students’ experience during their course. The Node1 also enables more higher-speed WiFi Smart Selangor Free Hotspots to be installed at strategic tourism locations and public areas surrounding Kuala Selangor.

In his officiating speech, YB Tuan Ir Izham bin Hashim said, “The Selangor state government believes that education is equal when the connectivity is equal. This initiative serves to enhance the learning experience in INPENS whilst also opening up more opportunities for industrial technology collaborations and spur more innovations and R&D,”

“Furthermore, surrounding industries in Kuala Selangor such as the local authorities, tourism, agriculture, mining, fisheries, small businesses and residents will benefit from the high-speed internet connectivity,” he added.

SMARTSEL has recently obtained the Network Facility Provider (NFP) and Network Services Provider (NSP) license from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on Thursday 8th August 2019. With this license, SMARTSEL can move forward with the development of the state's digital network and complementing the role of telecommunications industry players to improve access and speed while reducing the cost of broadband services in Selangor.

SMARTSEL’s mission, with the support of the Selangor State, is to address the digital divide by facilitating the provision of affordable and accessible high-speed internet connectivity to the underserved and rural areas through the SDN, enabling Selangor to become a Smart State by 2025.
